I do believe the patent system needs to change. I believe the duration of patents needs to be drastically shortened. Plus, there should be no renewal process for minor innovations. Also, the patent office needs to higher experts in the industries so that patents can be correctly given to those that deserve them.
I agree with Alfred. The patent system is simply outdated but I still think it's the lesser of two evils. People do need to have rights to their intellectual property but there's no reason that in the 21st century the process shouldn't be streamlined and easy to navigate. I don't think that it necessarily discourages innovation, I just think that it's a small barrier to entry that actually provides a lot of good.
Yes, but the onslaught of software patents have led to patent trolling, which doesn't require that you actually use the patent, but that you make it broad enough so that it can apply to anything in the future. So you patent it and wait. It is the most evil, and why Congress is finally trying to do something about it.
